Mates Of State – 2006-04-22

April 23rd, 2006

I don’t usually follow artists’ tours outside of my own city but I got motivated and decided to trek to Bellingham to see Mates Of State play for the second time this week. It was a fun trip for me and the ladyfriend as she got to see an old high school friend and I visited a friend who goes to WSU and played Street Fighter with him for a bit.

The Mates played in what is officially dubbed “Bakerview Auditorium” but really it’s a community church center called “Christ The King”. For being a huge room with a modest sound system, the recording turned out pretty good. It’s always nice to record at unusual places like that because the venue staff is usually really helpful with getting mics set up and such (I was offered a spot behind the board to set up my mics). Nobody ever hassles you for taping at venues like these, so it’s nice.

I also ran video because I knew I’d be able to. I’ve never mixed separate audio and video sources together so we’ll see how well I’m able to accomplish authoring my own DVD. If it turns out nice enough, I’ll post the DVD on my site for a limited-time download (or maybe a torrent, not sure)

In the meantime, here is the set from the show. If there’s any demand I’ll post Viva Voce’s opening set as well.

    AMAZING Brian!

Your recordings are top notch, taste in bands 5 star, and your generiousity is commendable.

I love reading your reviews, although they almost always give me a kick in the pants that I didn’t attend.

Hope to meet up with you sometime in Seattle. Seems I couldn’t miss you… just look for the guy with as much equipment as the official soundboard table.

    Cheeers buddy!!

Oi, I was just wondering how to listen to these gems? the file type it’s telling me is .flac, I gave iTunes a go, and no avail…

  3. Brian Says:

Are you on a Mac? If so, you’ll need to decode them to WAV using xACT (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952). On Windows you can decode them with FLAC frontend and listen to the WAV files or just install Foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org) and listen with that.

Hi Brian! I grabbed the other MOS recording you had up and am really enjoying it so far. Since I’m on dial up I have to be more choosy about how much I download. Is it worth getting this second recording as well in your opinion?

I’m hoping to see your DVD up, so I might just wait fot that. Although I’ll have to have a friend grab it for me. I think it’d take about 25 years for me to download a dvd. haha

Thanks again for these great recordings!

Actually they’re both about the same in quality. If you’re short on bandwidth, just stick with the first night in Seattle. It has more songs (though the Bellingham set has “I Got This Feeling” and the Seattle set doesn’t) and the mics were closer to the soundsystem.

    Thanks for the show, mate!
